Kitesurfing Tricks

Progress your riding with controlled tricks, better timing and a clear order of progression.

Advanced10 min read

Freestyle progression follows a logical order. Skipping steps does not get you to advanced tricks faster — it just means more crashes. Use the order below and you will progress steadily without dead ends.

Before learning tricks

Solid fundamentals — upwind riding, both tacks, controlled jumps, clean transitions — matter more than any trick. Spend the time on basics. Every advanced trick is a combination of basics done well.

Beginner tricks

  • Basic transition (stop, change direction)
  • Carving transition without stopping
  • Small controlled jump
  • Tail grab on a small jump
  • First backroll attempts in light wind
  • Toeside riding for a few seconds

Intermediate tricks

  • Backroll, clean rotation and landing
  • Frontroll on flat water
  • Jump transition (rotate in the air)
  • Downloop transition
  • Board grab in the air
  • Small kiteloop transition

Advanced tricks

  • Unhooked raley
  • Handle pass after unhooked rotation
  • Megaloop with controlled descent
  • Board-off in the air
  • Strapless rotations and grabs
  • Wave riding turns and floaters

Progression order

  1. 01Transitions first — they teach board control
  2. 02Small jumps with grabs
  3. 03Rotations (backroll, frontroll)
  4. 04Downloop and jump transitions
  5. 05Loops only with strong jump control
  6. 06Unhooked freestyle once hooked basics are solid

Common mistakes

  • Skipping fundamentals to chase tricks
  • Trying loops before mastering high jumps
  • No space downwind for the landing
  • Wrong kite size — overpowered or underpowered
  • Trying advanced tricks in gusty wind
  • No clear plan to redirect the kite after landing

FAQ

Frequently asked

What is the easiest kitesurfing trick?+

A clean carving transition. It teaches edge control, kite timing and body position — every advanced trick is built on those.

When should I try a backroll?+

Once you can boost a clean controlled jump and land riding away every time.

Are kite loops dangerous?+

They can be. Start with kiteloop transitions in moderate wind with deep water and progress slowly to bigger loops.

What tricks should beginners learn first?+

Transitions, small jumps and grabs. Rotations come after solid jump control.

Do I need flat water for freestyle?+

Flat water is much easier for unhooked freestyle. Choppy water still works for jumps, transitions and rotations.

Build the basics first

Every trick is a stack of basics. Make sure jumping and upwind riding feel automatic before moving on.
