Beginners ask "how windy does it need to be" expecting one number, and the honest answer is a band with your body weight written on it. The good news: the band is narrow enough to be useful, and learning to read it takes ten minutes. Here is the wind picture from dead calm to survival conditions.
The short answer
The practical minimum for twin-tip kitesurfing is about 12 knots for light riders and 14 knots for average weights. The sweet spot — powered, controllable, fun — is 15–22 knots. Above 25 things get sporty, above 30 the beach belongs to heavy riders on small kites and Big Air specialists. The wind bands, rider by rider
Under 10 knots: no. Not for twin-tips, not honestly for anyone learning. A kite stays in the air but cannot pull a rider onto a plane. This is foil territory and patience territory.
10–14 knots: the light-wind game. Rideable, with the right tools: a big kite, a big board, and technique. Lighter riders get planing first — a 60 kg rider on a 12m has genuine fun at 12 knots while a 90 kg rider waits on the beach. The honest move at this band is a bigger board before a bigger kite.
15–22 knots: the sweet spot. Where the sport happens. Nearly every weight finds a working kite size here — the calculator names yours — and conditions forgive mistakes: enough power to ride, not enough to punish. If you are learning, pray for 18.
23–28 knots: strong. Experienced riders' favorite weather on 7–9m kites. Beginners should watch from the beach: the same gust that boosts an expert's jump takes a beginner for a drag.
29+ knots: specialist weather. Cape Town season, Big Air conditions, small kites and full commitment. Magnificent, and not a learning environment.
Why your weight owns the number
A kite has to overcome your weight before you plane, and the power available grows with the square of the wind speed — the full physics is one sentence and it explains everything: small wind changes are big power changes. Every 10 kg of rider weight shifts the whole band roughly one kite size, which is why "how much wind do I need" and "what size kite do I need" are the same question wearing different hats.
Reading a forecast like a kitesurfer
Sailors read average wind. Kitesurfers read three other things first:
Gusts. A forecast of "16 gusting 26" is not a 16-knot day; it is a day where your kite must survive 26. Ride the gust number when choosing kite size, and be suspicious of any spread wider than about 8 knots — gusty wind is harder than strong wind.
Direction. Side-onshore is the gold standard: it brings you home if things fail. Offshore wind takes you to sea regardless of speed — why that matters is here — and dead onshore makes launching harder and shoves you back onto the beach. Every spot page we publish grades wind directions individually, because the same 18 knots can be perfect at one beach and unusable at its neighbor.
Trend and source. Thermal winds build through the afternoon and die at sunset, reliably. Frontal winds arrive violently and swing direction. Two forecast models agreeing means more than one model shouting. If a dark cloud line is upwind, the forecast no longer applies.
Where the power actually comes from
