Every kite size chart on the internet is a compressed answer to one question: how much pull do you need, and how much does this wind deliver? Understand that trade once and you can sanity-check any chart, any shop recommendation and any forum argument. So let's understand it.
The short answer
For a 75 kg rider in 18 knots, the answer is a 12m all-round kite. Heavier riders size up, lighter riders size down, stronger wind means smaller kites. As a working rule: every 10 kg of body weight shifts you about one kite size, and a few knots of wind do the same in the other direction. Why wind matters twice
The physics you actually need fits in one sentence: the power a kite makes grows with the square of the wind speed. Double the wind, four times the pull. That is why the difference between 14 and 18 knots feels enormous on the water while looking small in the forecast, and why kite sizing can never be a single number per person.
The kite's job is to turn wind into just enough pull to get you planing and keep you there. Too little and you sink, work the kite constantly and drift downwind. Too much and every gust hits like a van. The right size puts you in the middle: powered, with reserve at the top for lulls and margin at the bottom for gusts.
The reference points
All numbers below assume a modern all-round tube kite and a twin-tip board, ridden by someone who can hold an edge. Treat them as centers of ranges, not walls:
At 12 knots — light wind, the frustrating zone: 60 kg → 12m; 75 kg → 14m or a bigger board; 90 kg → 15m+ and honestly, patience.
At 15 knots — the everyday minimum at many spots: 60 kg → 10m; 75 kg → 12m; 90 kg → 14m.
At 18 knots — the sweet spot: 60 kg → 9m; 75 kg → 12m; 90 kg → 13m.
At 22 knots — proper wind: 60 kg → 7m; 75 kg → 9m; 90 kg → 11m.
At 26+ knots — small-kite weather: 60 kg → 5–6m; 75 kg → 7–8m; 90 kg → 9m.
Two things stand out. First, the 12m earns its reputation as the one-kite answer for average-weight riders: it covers roughly 14–22 knots for 75 kg, which is most rideable days at most spots. Second, weight moves the whole scale: a 90 kg rider's 18-knot kite is a 60 kg rider's 12-knot kite. If your forecast speaks m/s or km/h instead of knots, the wind speed converter translates.
What the charts leave out
Your board is half the equation. A bigger twin-tip planes earlier and can substitute for a full kite size in light wind. Beginners on generously sized boards need less kite than the chart claims, which is safer anyway.
Your level changes the answer. Beginners should sit at the lower edge of every range. An experienced rider extracts power from a kite by working it through the window; a beginner cannot yet, but a beginner also cannot yet dump power when a gust hits. Less kite is forgiveness. Kite design shifts ranges. A dedicated light-wind kite pulls like a size bigger; a wave kite depowers like a size smaller. The ranges above assume the all-rounders that beginners actually buy. Every model in our Kite Index lists its real-world range on the dossier.
Gusts count, averages lie. A forecast of "18 knots gusting 28" is not an 18-knot day; size for what the gusts do to you, not what the average promises. Thermal spots with steady wind let you size closer to the edge than gusty coastal spots.
Building a quiver: the two-kite answer
Nobody covers every day with one kite, and almost nobody needs five. The classic two-kite quiver spaces sizes about 3–4 meters apart, centered on your local wind. For a 75 kg rider at a typical European spot: 12m + 9m covers roughly 14 to 26 knots, which is nearly every session worth driving to. Heavier riders shift both numbers up one size; light riders shift down.
The mistake to avoid is buying two sizes too close together — an 11 and a 12 overlap almost entirely and leave both ends of your range uncovered. Gap first, then fill.
The three classic sizing mistakes
Buying the kite you tried on your best day. School kites get chosen for the day's conditions. The 9m you loved in 25 knots of Tarifa levante is a wall-hanger at your 15-knot home lake. Size for the wind you will actually ride weekly, not the wind you met on holiday.
Sizing up "to get more days." It works until the wind picks up mid-session and you are the most powered person on the water with the least experience handling it. If light wind rules your spot, a bigger board is the safer upgrade before a bigger kite.
Copying your friend. Unless your friend shares your weight within a few kilos, their quiver is data about them. The chart above is honest about why.
