The process of getting the kite safely into the air.

What it means

The launch is the process of getting the kite from the ground into the air, and it is statistically one of the most accident-prone moments in kitesurfing. On the water a kite has room to misbehave; on land it has bystanders, parked cars, rocks and you, standing at the one moment when the lines are attached but nothing is proven yet.

The standard assisted launch is a small ritual with sharp rules. The helper holds the kite at the edge of the wind window, leading edge up; the rider tensions the lines, checks their run (no crossed lines, no line under the kite), then signals with a clear thumbs-up. The helper releases without throwing, and the rider steers the kite calmly up the edge of the window to noon. Every element exists because its absence has hurt someone: a kite released deep in the window drags the rider across the beach, a thrown kite stalls and slams, a missed line check turns the launch into a loop.

Self-launching (using sand on the wingtip or a drift launch from the water) is a genuine skill for empty beaches, learned deliberately and matched to the spot. The universal parts are the same everywhere: space downwind, an escape plan, a hand on the quick release, and no launch until every check is green.
