Waves

Waves in kitesurfing are organized, breaking or rolling water formations, born from swell that traveled far from its storm or built locally by strong wind. They turn the water from a surface into terrain: ramps to launch from, faces to carve, sections to race and whitewater to escape.

How a wave rides depends on how it breaks. Spilling waves crumble gently forward and forgive mistakes, which makes them the entry point for wave riding. Plunging waves throw a lip and barrel, spectacular and unforgiving, the domain of experienced riders at spots like Ponta Preta or One Eye. Between the two lie most real days. Wind direction relative to the wave decides the game: side-shore wind along the face allows true down-the-line riding, onshore wind stacks the break into a playground of ramps, and offshore grooms the faces while adding its own safety tax.

Waves rewrite the rulebook too. A rider on a wave has right of way, and dropping in on someone's wave is the sport's cardinal sin at surf spots. They also rewrite the physics: currents run harder near breaks, sets arrive in pulses with lulls between, and a kite dropped in the impact zone often does not come back out. Respecting the ocean's timing, watching a spot for a full set cycle before launching, is wave riding's first skill.
