The idea

Wind direction is a beach question, not a compass question

A forecast says "NE, 18 knots" — and that sentence means nothing until you put a beach under it. The wind that arrives straight off the sea at one bay wraps a headland and leaves the land at the next one. So wind sports never ask "which compass direction?" first; they ask "which way relative to MY beach?", and the answer always lands in one of five classes.

One convention before the five: wind is named by the direction it comes from. Wind is always named by the direction it comes FROM. A "NE wind" or "45°" blows out of the northeast, toward the southwest — meteorology, marine forecasts and every kite forecast app agree on this.

Class 1

Onshore

Wind blowing straight from the sea onto the beach, within about 22° of head-on. Everything in the water gets pushed back toward land. Also called: full onshore, sea breeze straight in — German "auflandig", Brazilian "vento maral".

Class 2

Side-onshore

Wind coming in at an angle, roughly 22–67° off straight-in — diagonally from the sea. The classic teaching wind: it lets you ride away from the beach and still washes you back if things go wrong. Also called: cross-onshore — German "schräg auflandig", Brazilian "maral de lado".

Class 3

Sideshore

Wind blowing parallel to the beach, roughly 67–112° off straight-in. Ride out on one tack, back on the other — the coast becomes a lane. Also called: cross-shore, side — Brazilian "vento lateral", German "sideshore" too.

The coast turns into a training lane — out one way, home the other.Out and back without fighting for angle. Know your downwind exit: a long lull drifts you along the coast, not onto it.

Class 4

Side-offshore

Wind leaving the land at an angle, roughly 112–157° off straight-in. It feels almost like sideshore — until a lull shows you which way the drift really points: out. Also called: cross-offshore — German "schräg ablandig", Brazilian "terral de lado".

Feels like sideshore, drifts like offshore — the trap direction.One lull or one relaunch that won't come, and you're drifting out. Land wind is gusty on top of it. Rescue cover or don't.

Class 5 — the danger wind

Offshore (ablandig, terral)

Wind blowing from the land out to sea, within about 22° of straight out. Near the beach it often looks deceptively calm and glassy — the land blocks the chop while the wind carries everything away from shore. Also called: land breeze straight out — German "ablandig", Brazilian "vento terral".

Two physics stack against you. Air that crossed land arrives gusty and turbulent, because buildings, dunes and trees chew it up before it reaches the water. And the drift only knows one direction: out. A dropped kite, a failed relaunch or plain exhaustion becomes distance from the beach — and a self-rescue only travels downwind, which offshore means further away. Kite schools put it plainly: offshore spots are boat-cover spots, or they are no-ride days.

One wind, five sports

What each sport wants

Kitesurfing and wing foiling share a verdict sheet: side-onshore to sideshore is the playground, full onshore is safe but athletic, and anything offshore-leaning is rescue-cover territory — a kite or wing that stops flying is a drift raft.

Windsurfers read the same table with one nuance: a rigged windsurfer points higher upwind than a kite, which helps exactly as long as nothing breaks. The drift physics after a breakage are identical, so the offshore verdict stays the same.

Surfers invert the whole table. Offshore wind presses against the incoming waves, grooming faces glassy and holding lips open longer — the postcard conditions. Onshore crumbles them into mush. The one caveat surfers carry: the wind that grooms the wave also pulls a loose board and a tired paddler seaward. Same physics, opposite priorities.

SUP gets the strictest sheet of all, straight from rescue organizations: paddle craft should avoid offshore winds entirely — a standing paddler is a sail, and the drift outruns most arms.

Reading wind direction in a forecast

Careful with map arrows: most forecast maps draw the arrow pointing where the air travels TO — the opposite end from the wind's name. The degree circle runs clockwise from north:

Wind is always named by the direction it comes FROM. A "NE wind" or "45°" blows out of the northeast, toward the southwest — meteorology, marine forecasts and every kite forecast app agree on this.

Then convert to your beach. That is the whole trick of this page. Three worked examples: a beach facing south with a SE forecast gets side-onshore from the left (the school wind). A beach facing north with a SW forecast gets side-offshore from the left — 225 and 0 look far apart on paper, but the true angle is 135°. And a Ceará beach facing northwest under the ENE trade gets sideshore from the right, two degrees shy of side-offshore. Cases like that are why the Beach Check exists. Some winds are famous enough to carry names — and every one of them proves the same point: the name tells you origin and character, but the beach decides the class.

Levante

An easterly that funnels through the strait — side to side-offshore on Tarifa's town beaches.

Famously strong and gusty. The same Levante that makes Tarifa windy also shows why beach orientation matters: a few kilometers up the coast it arrives at a completely different angle.

Months of trade wind at a friendly angle are why Brazil's northeast became the world's downwinder: the coast bends, the Nordeste doesn't, and the angle stays rideable for hundreds of kilometers.

Wind directions, answered

What are the wind directions in kitesurfing?+

Five classes, named relative to the beach you stand on: onshore (straight from the sea), side-onshore (diagonally in), sideshore (parallel to the beach), side-offshore (diagonally out) and offshore (straight off the land). The same forecast wind lands in a different class on every differently-oriented beach — that is why the classes matter more than the compass letters.

What does offshore wind mean?+

Wind blowing from the land out to sea. Near the beach it often looks calm and glassy because the land blocks the chop — while the same wind carries everything that floats away from shore. Kite schools treat it as the forbidden direction without boat cover; Brazilians call it vento terral, Germans ablandiger Wind.

What does onshore wind mean?+

Which wind direction is best for beginners?+

Side-onshore. It lets you ride away from the beach at an easy angle, the sea-breeze flow tends to be smooth, and if anything goes wrong the wind still washes you back to land. It is the direction kite schools pick on purpose.

What is sideshore (cross-shore) wind?+

Wind blowing parallel to the beach. You ride out on one tack and back on the other, and the coast becomes a training lane. The one habit that matters: know your downwind exit, because a long lull drifts you along the coast rather than onto it.

What is the difference between side-onshore and side-offshore wind?+

Both blow at a diagonal — the difference is which way the drift points. Side-onshore drifts you back to the sand; side-offshore feels almost the same on the water but drifts you away from land the moment your kite stops flying. That near-miss similarity is exactly what makes side-offshore the trap direction.

Is onshore wind good for surfing?+

Mostly no — it blows against the wave faces, crumbles them and shortens rides. The honest exception: the messy white water it creates is where surf schools put complete beginners, because unbroken green faces don't matter yet at that stage.

Why do surfers want offshore wind when kitesurfers avoid it?+

Because they need opposite things from the sea surface. Offshore wind presses against incoming waves, grooms the faces glassy and holds them open longer — surfing's dream conditions. A kitesurfer doesn't care about wave grooming and cares entirely about drift, and offshore drift points at the horizon. Same wind, opposite verdicts.

How do I read wind direction in a forecast?+

Wind is always named by the direction it comes FROM: a NE wind blows out of the northeast. Then convert to your beach: compare the wind's origin with the direction your beach faces, and the angle between them gives you the class — which is exactly what the Beach Check on this page computes.

What does a wind direction of 270° or a NE wind mean?+

Degrees name the origin on a compass circle: 0° or 360° is north, 90° east, 180° south, 270° west — so 270° is a west wind and NE sits at 45°. One caution: many forecast maps draw arrows pointing where the air travels TO, the opposite end from the wind's name.

What do vento terral and vento maral mean?+

Brazilian Portuguese for the two big classes: terral is the land wind (offshore) and maral the sea wind (onshore). On Brazil's kite coast the words carry the same safety weight as everywhere else — terral means the drift points away from the beach.
