France is one of the most complete kitesurfing countries in Europe — a Mediterranean coast built on the Tramontane, an Atlantic seaboard with wind and waves, and inland lagoons that are perfect for learning. Whether you are after the flat étangs around Montpellier, the wind-machine of Leucate, or the Atlantic swell of the southwest, you can learn and progress here for most of the year.
The Mediterranean is the engine: Leucate (home of the Mondial du Vent), Gruissan, the Étang de Thau, La Franqui and the étangs around Montpellier all get the strong, dry Tramontane. The Atlantic coast — the bassin d'Arcachon, the Gironde, Brittany and the beaches of the Vendée — brings ocean wind and waves. The lagoons in particular are why France is such a strong beginner country: flat, shallow, standing-depth water right next to the sea.
