How we rate
Every kite, board, bar and harness in the KSO index carries ten scores on a 1–10 scale — the same ten characteristics, the same yardstick, across every brand. This page explains exactly where those numbers come from, what they can and cannot tell you, and why no brand can buy them.
KSO
The promise
- Scores are editorial. No brand pays for a score, can veto a score, or sees a score before publication.
- The registries are locked. Adding or renaming a characteristic requires a full catalog re-assessment — that guarantee is what makes cross-brand comparison honest.
- Descriptive traits are labelled. Bar pressure (kites), flex (boards), directness (bars) and stiffness (harnesses) are character axes, not quality grades — a 3 is not worse than an 8.
- Nothing publishes thin. A product page only enters search indexes as a full dossier: complete confirmed scores, substantial editorial text, real imagery and explained ratings.

Float and glide on the way down.
Turning speed
How fast the kite pivots through a steering input.
Bar pressurecharacter trait
Feedback weight at the bar: 1 = feather-light, 10 = heavy. A character trait, not a score.
Relaunch
How easily the kite restarts off the water.
Wave drift
Stability with slack lines riding down the line.
Unhooked pop
Slack and pop for unhooked freestyle.
Low-end power
Earliest planing and grunt at the bottom of the range.
Upwind drive
Angle and efficiency riding upwind.
Ease of use
Forgiveness: how much the kite tolerates mistakes.

Landing comfort
How softly the board absorbs hard landings and flat touchdowns.
Early planing
How soon the board gets going at the bottom of the wind range.
Upwind drive
Edge angle and efficiency riding upwind.
Chop control
Composure at speed through rough, choppy water.
Carving
How willingly the board rails through carved turns.
Edge grip
How securely rail and fins hold when fully loaded.
Top-end speed
Glide and control as the pace rises.
Ease of use
Forgiveness: how much the board tolerates mistakes.
Flexcharacter trait
Stiffness at the tips: 1 = very soft, 10 = very stiff. A character trait, not a score.
Registry

Depower stroke
Throw length and how much power actually disappears when you sheet out.
Safety release
How cleanly the quick release fires under load and how easily it reloads one-handed.
Untwist
How well front lines and centre unit untwist after rotations and loops.
Trim access
Reach and operation of the trim system under load, including on-the-fly adjustment.
Grip comfort
Ergonomics of diameter, grip surface and bar ends over long sessions and cold hands.
Durability
Build quality, wear-part longevity and how serviceable the bar is season after season.
Adjustability
Width and line-length options out of the box: one bar covering many kite sizes.
Line performance
Line quality: stretch behaviour, equal lengths and how the set ages.
Ease of use
Setup simplicity and how foolproof the whole system is for every rider level.
Directnesscharacter trait
Bar feel: 1 = cushioned and comfortable, 10 = ultra-direct. A character trait, not a score.

Back support
Load distribution and lower-back support under sustained pull.
Locked-in fit
How well the harness stays put — no riding up, no twisting under load.
Freedom of movement
Rotation and mobility for freestyle, wave riding and everything twisted.
Pressure comfort
Pressure distribution: no rib squeeze, no hip pressure points over long sessions.
Spreader options
Hook, sliding rope and spreader-bar options — and how well they swap.
Durability
Materials, wear behaviour and how many seasons the harness genuinely lasts.
Lightness
Weight on the body — dry, wet and in motion.
Drainage
How quickly water and sand leave the harness, and how little it soaks up.
Ease of use
Getting in and out, closures and on-body fine-tuning without a manual.
Stiffnesscharacter trait
Shell character: 1 = soft and flexible, 10 = hardshell-rigid. A character trait, not a score.
Prozess
How a score is made
Research first
Independent reviews, verified specifications and documented rider feedback are collected per product. Marketing copy is never a source for scores.
Uniform scoring
Editors score all ten characteristics against the registry definitions — identical criteria for a €800 kite and a €2,500 one.
Human confirmation
Automated research proposals help, but a product publishes only after human editorial confirmation. Any automated score change bigger than ±2 always returns to human review.
Continuous verification
An automated engine checks official brand pages twice a week for prices, availability and new model years. Every model-year row shows when its data was last verified.
Cited consensus
The "What independent reviews say" section only ever cites sources our research actually read — citations cannot be fabricated by construction.
Open corrections
Riders and brands can suggest corrections on every product page. Brand-submitted data is reviewed by editors before anything changes — realistic or declined.
Ehrlich
What the scores are not
A 9 in boost does not make a kite better than a 7 — it makes it better for riders chasing height. The index deliberately crowns no overall winner: the right gear depends on your discipline, level, weight and conditions.
