The calculator only ever selects from that sourced corridor; it never extrapolates beyond what the charts actually cover, and it says so honestly when your inputs leave the well-charted span.
Length carries the headline, but width does the quiet work: a centimeter of width adds more surface than a centimeter of length, which is why every recommendation pairs both. Honest limits
Boots change the math — wakestyle riders with boots typically size up and pick specific reinforced boards. This calculator assumes straps.
Directionals and surfboards follow completely different sizing logic (volume and outline, not twintip length). Use it for twintips only.
Kids and riders under ~45 kg sit outside the published adult charts — follow a kids-specific chart or a school's advice.
A board's flex, rocker and outline move its real-world feel within the size range; two 138s can ride very differently. The range gets you to the right shelf, the model chart picks the board.

As a starting point for an intermediate freeride rider: around 60 kg ride roughly a 134 cm twintip, around 75 kg a 138 cm, around 90 kg a 142 cm. Every published chart gives ranges rather than exact numbers — the calculator above turns your weight, level and style into that range.
Width does a lot of quiet work. Most twintips run 39–46 cm, and a centimeter of width adds more surface than a centimeter of length. Wider boards plane earlier and feel more stable; narrower boards hold an edge better in strong wind and chop. The charts pair each length with a typical width, which is why the calculator answers with both.
Yes. A larger board — typically 140–145 cm for average adult weights — planes earlier, forgives sloppy edge control and makes your first upwind meters much easier. You will likely move to a smaller board within a season or two, which is why many schools recommend buying the big first board used.
A dedicated lightwind twintip is noticeably longer and wider — roughly 145–160 cm — built to plane in marginal wind that a regular board cannot use. It is a second board, not a replacement: once the wind fills in, all that surface fights you. If your home spot is light-wind-prone, it can double your sessions.
Freestyle riders usually go a touch shorter and stiffer than their freeride size — around 2 cm under the freeride recommendation. The stiffer flex stores more energy for pop, and the shorter outline is easier to throw around. Landings get harder-edged in return, which is why beginners should learn on a freeride shape first.

They agree remarkably well on the middle — the ranges we cite cross-check within a centimeter or two for average weights — but every model distributes surface differently through outline, rocker and flex. Treat the calculator's range as the sizing corridor, then use the manufacturer's own chart for the specific model.
Below roughly 45 kg the published adult charts stop being reliable, and kids' boards add softer flex on top of shorter length. The calculator flags this honestly instead of guessing — for children, follow a kids-specific chart or a school's advice.
For most riders, yes. Twintips age gracefully compared to kites — no bladders, no canopy fatigue. Check the tips for delamination, the inserts for pulled threads and the base for deep gouges. The 'check a board' mode above tells you whether the size fits your weight before you commit.
