How to use this wetsuit calculator

Set the real water temperature — from a buoy reading, your harbour's measurement or the rider next to you, not a monthly average. Water is hyperlocal: an upwelling or a river mouth can move it 5°C overnight. Then add air temperature and wind, pick your sport, and read the result with its reasoning open. The calculator tells you why it moved you off the chart, so you can disagree with it intelligently.

The science

Why cold water is a different problem than cold air

Water conducts heat away from your body roughly 25 times faster than air of the same temperature, a standard figure in the cold-water safety literature. That is why 17°C water feels like a problem while a 17°C day feels like spring, and why hypothermia is possible in water most people would call mild.

Below roughly 10–15°C, two things arrive before hypothermia: cold shock (the involuntary gasp on immersion) and manual dexterity loss — numb fingers that can't work a chicken loop or a leash. The US National Weather Service is blunt about the first one: cold shock in 10–15°C water can hit as hard as it does at 2°C. A wetsuit blunts both. Neoprene traps a thin film of water your body heats once, plus thousands of gas bubbles doing the insulating; the suit only works when it fits tight enough that this film stays put.

Our seven temperature bands are a consensus we built from many published guides across the surf and kite industry — among them O'Neill, Rip Curl, Billabong and evo — cross-checked and merged into one chart; where guides differ by a degree, we hold the warmer edge. The brands themselves back the adjustments: Rip Curl's own guide notes that a cold offshore wind "can shift your recommendation up a full step" and that heat loss on long sessions is cumulative. That is exactly what our wind and session factors encode. The calculator never invents an in-between value: it selects a band from that consensus, then shows every adjustment it makes on top.

Every temperature band, explained

24°C+ (75°F+) — no neoprene needed

Tropical water. Skip the wetsuit and wear a UV top or lycra: the sun burns harder on the water than the water ever cools you, and a top stops board rash on long sessions.

On a kite in nuking wind, a 2mm top still earns its place — spray in 30 knots is cold at any water temperature.

21–24°C (70–75°F) — 2mm shorty or neoprene top

Warm enough that surfers stay comfortable in a shorty for hours. The core stays warm; arms and legs stay free.

Wind sports flip this band: standing in 20+ knots of apparent wind, most kite and wing riders are happier in a thin 3/2 full suit — the calculator shows exactly when.

18–21°C (64–70°F) — the 3/2 zone

The most-sold wetsuit thickness in the world for a reason: a 3/2 covers Mediterranean summers, Brazilian winters and North Sea Augusts.

Kiting this band in strong wind or on overcast days, a 4/3 is the honest call — half the riders on the water in 19°C are wearing one.

14–18°C (57–64°F) — 4/3 territory

Now the suit does real work. A 4/3 with sealed seams keeps sessions long; below 16°C add 3mm boots before your toes decide for you.

This is the band where wind sports and surfing separate hardest: a surfer's 4/3 day is a kiter's 5/4 day once the wind passes 20 knots.

11–14°C (52–57°F) — 5/4, boots, first gloves

Cold-water riding starts here. A 5/4 (or 5/4/3) with 5mm boots is the baseline; from 12°C down, 2–3mm gloves stop the bar-grip ache.

A hood is optional on sunny, light-wind days and quickly non-optional otherwise — you lose a large share of heat through a wet head.

8–11°C (46–52°F) — 6/5 or hooded 5/4

Full winter kit: 6/5 or a hooded 5/4, 5mm boots, 3–5mm gloves, hood on. Seam construction now decides the session — sealed and taped seams ride roughly one band warmer than stitched flatlock.

Plan around your hands: below 10°C, grip strength fades fast, and relaunching a kite with numb fingers is how short sessions become swims.

Below 8°C (46°F) — the serious end

A hooded 6/5+ winter suit, 7mm boots and 5mm mittens buy you a window, not a free pass. Many riders switch to a drysuit here, and below 5°C water a drysuit is the sane default.

Rules that outrank any chart: never alone, exit downwind, out of the water before you shiver. Cold shock and dexterity loss arrive faster than most riders expect.

Why wear one

What a wetsuit does for you — beyond warmth

A second skin in crashes

Kitesurfing crashes happen at speed, and water at 30 km/h is not soft. Neoprene spreads the slap of a hard landing across the panel instead of your skin — the difference between a red mark and a bruise that ends the week.

Reef and rock protection

At reef spots and rocky launches, 3mm of neoprene decides between a scratch and a cut that needs stitches. Legs and knees take most of it; a full suit covers exactly those.

Buoyancy when it counts

Neoprene floats. In a self-rescue or a long body-drag back, a full suit carries part of your weight, keeps your position higher in the water and saves energy you will want later.

Cold-shock insurance

The first seconds of an unexpected drop into cold water are the dangerous ones. A suit turns the gasp reflex into a flinch — that alone is a safety feature.

Sun, jellyfish, chafe

A suit is sunscreen that doesn't wash off, a barrier layer at jellyfish spots, and the reason a three-hour session doesn't end with harness rash.

Longer sessions, faster learning

Cold cuts sessions short and makes movements stiff. Warm riders take more attempts per session — dressed right, you simply learn faster.

Where wetsuits cost you

Mobility and arm pump

Every millimetre resists movement. A too-thick suit costs bar feel and pumps your forearms — one reason the calculator never pushes more than one band past the chart.

Overheating

A 4/3 in 23°C sunshine is a portable sauna. Flush water in at the neck or take the thinner alternate the result panel offers.

Cost

A good suit is an investment. Our buyer's guide pegs a new 4/3 at roughly €200–400, solid used ones at €80–220 — and a 4/3 famously buys Northern European riders about four extra months of season.

Chafe and rash

Wrong size or stiff seams rub — neck and armpits first. Fit beats thickness, every time.

The pee question

It happens, it's warm for thirty seconds, and the suit smells if you never rinse it. Rinse inside-out with fresh water after every session; done.

Drying and care

A suit stored wet grows bacteria and dies young. Dry it inside-out first, out of direct sun, and it lasts years instead of seasons.

Why kitesurfers dress warmer than surfers in the same water

A surfer spends the session low in the water, sheltered between swells. A kitesurfer stands upright on the water for an hour straight, soaked in spray, riding through 15–25 knots of apparent wind. Evaporative cooling on a wet suit in that wind is brutal — the same physics that makes you shiver stepping out of a pool into a breeze, running continuously.

Wing foiling adds a twist: pumping wing and board is hard work, and once on foil you ride mostly dry, so wingers often dress lighter than kiters — until they're learning and falling every run, which is exactly what the calculator's "in the water a lot" switch is for. This sport-and-wind awareness is what a surf-brand chart cannot give you, and it is the whole reason this tool asks about more than water temperature.

Wetsuit thickness by sport

Kitesurfing wetsuit

The tool is built kite-first: you stand in the apparent wind the whole session, soaked in spray, so the wind input carries real weight here. From about 20 knots, read any surf chart one band too thin — and at rocky launches, boots earn their place earlier than you think.

Wing foiling wetsuit

Pumping wing and board is hard work, and on foil you ride mostly dry — wingers often wear one band less than kiters in the same water. Learning flips that: falling every run means constant immersion, so switch on "in the water a lot".

Windsurfing wetsuit

Same standing wind exposure as kiting, plus real immersion while you're still uphauling. Most windsurfers land on the kite-style recommendation; anyone planing dry all day can shade one step thinner on mild days.

Surfing wetsuit

The baseline sport: the temperature bands come from surf-industry charts, so in light wind this calculator lands where the published brand guides do. Wind still counts at half weight — an offshore winter session cools you on every paddle back.

SUP wetsuit

Mostly dry and working hard, which the calculator credits. Flat, warm days forgive a thinner suit; the moment a swim back is possible, dress for the water, not for the air — the oldest paddling rule there is.

Fit & construction

Fit beats thickness

A wetsuit should fit like a firm handshake everywhere: snug at the lower back and armpits, no folds, no air pockets, and you can still raise your arms fully overhead. If water pools anywhere, the suit can't insulate — the thin film inside a well-fitted suit warms once and stays warm; a loose suit re-fills with cold water on every crash.

Construction is the hidden variable: sealed and taped seams (GBS, liquid-taped) ride roughly one band — about 2°C — warmer than stitched flatlock at the same thickness. Between two suits at the same price, take the better seams over the extra millimetre.

Honest limits

When the calculator is wrong

Fit and seams beat thickness — a leaky 5/4 loses to a well-fitted, taped 4/3. No calculator sees how a suit sits on you.

Individual variance is real: two riders, same day, one band apart, both right. Treat the result as the centre of your range, not a verdict.

Water temperature is hyperlocal. Upwelling, tide and river mouths shift it faster than any forecast — measure or ask, don't assume.

Kids and very lean riders lose heat faster than any adult chart assumes. Set "I run cold", shorten the session, and err warm.

Below 8°C water, no chart replaces judgment, a buddy and an exit plan. The tool flags this zone; it cannot ride it for you.

Heated vests and drysuits sit outside this model — a heated vest under a 5/4 can genuinely replace a 6/5.

FAQ

Wetsuit questions, answered

What wetsuit do I need for 15°C (59°F) water?+

A 4/3 full suit is the standard call at 15°C, with 3mm boots once you feel your toes going numb. Kitesurfing or wing foiling in 20+ knots of wind, treat it as 5/4 water — the constant apparent wind on a wet suit pulls heat much faster than sitting in a lineup does.

5/4 or 4/3 — how do I decide?+

The 4/3 covers roughly 14–18°C water, the 5/4 takes over from about 11–14°C. Between them, go by wind and by yourself: strong wind, long sessions, overcast days or a body that runs cold all point to the 5/4. A modern 5/4 flexes better than most 4/3s did ten years ago, so the mobility penalty is small.

From what temperature do I need boots, gloves and a hood?+

Boots from about 16°C water (3mm, then 5mm below 14°C and 7mm below 8°C). Gloves from about 12°C. A hood from about 11°C — below that it stops being optional, because you lose a large share of heat through an uncovered head in the water.

Why do kitesurfers need warmer wetsuits than surfers in the same water?+

A surfer sits low in the water between waves; a kitesurfer stands upright in the full wind the whole session, wet from spray. Evaporative cooling on a wet suit in 20 knots of apparent wind is severe — that is why our calculator asks for wind and sport, and why a surf-brand chart alone under-dresses riders of wind sports.

Is wing foiling colder or warmer than kitesurfing?+

Usually slightly warmer, despite the same wind exposure: pumping the wing and the board is real work, and once you are up on the foil you stay mostly dry. Learners are the exception — falling every other run means constant immersion, which is why the calculator has an "in the water a lot" switch.

Does a wetsuit protect against reef, rocks and crashes?+

Yes, and for kitesurfing this matters as much as warmth. Neoprene works like a second skin: it takes the sting out of high-speed water impact, blunts scrapes from reef and rocks, and prevents most of the board- and harness-chafe of a long session. It is not armour — an impact vest adds real protection — but the difference between bare skin and 3mm of neoprene in a crash is large.

What do I wear for winter kitesurfing in Northern Europe?+

Water of 4–8°C means a hooded 6/5 winter suit with sealed seams, 7mm boots and 5mm mittens or lobster gloves as the baseline. Many winter riders switch to a drysuit for sessions over an hour. Below 5°C water, treat every session as an exercise in exit planning: ride shorter runs, stay upwind of your exit, never go alone.

How tight should a wetsuit fit?+

Like a firm handshake everywhere: no folds, no air pockets, no gaps at the lower back or armpits, and you should still be able to raise your arms fully. Shorty or full suit for warm water?+

From about 21–24°C water, a 2mm shorty or a neoprene top covers most surfers. On a kite or wing in real wind, a thin 3/2 full suit is often the better call in the same water — and below 21°C the full suit wins for everyone. Above 24°C, skip neoprene and wear a UV top for sun and rash protection.

When do I need a drysuit instead of a wetsuit?+

When water drops below about 8°C and your sessions run long, a drysuit with insulation underneath keeps you functional in a way no wetsuit can — wetsuits still let water contact skin, and below 10°C that costs dexterity fast. Below 5°C water a drysuit is the sane default for any session length.

Is peeing in your wetsuit OK?+

Everyone asks, so: it happens, it is warm for thirty seconds, and your suit will smell if you never rinse it. Rinse the suit inside-out in fresh water after every session and it stays fine. The real hygiene rule is drying: a suit stored wet grows bacteria whether you peed in it or not.
